What does the science say?

MSC was developed by Christopher K. Germer, PhD, a leader in the integration of mindfulness and psychotherapy, and Kristin Neff, PhD, a pioneering researcher in the field of self-compassion. They combined the power of mindfulness with self-compassion practices to create a course that fortifies mental resilience and emotional well-being. MSC flips the script of our inner critic, asking us to consider ourselves as if a loved one and bringing the same level of compassion to ourselves as we would to others.

Rockliff et al (2008) found that individuals with a higher sense of self-compassion (self-rated) were found to have decreased levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), which was associated with a greater ability to gain emotional control and self-soothe when stressed.

It’s often assumed that having self-compassion makes us ‘soft’ or unable to deal with difficult emotions but the reality is quite the opposite. Self-compassion forms the foundation of self-awareness - giving us the ability to give ourselves what we need when we are stressed or anxious.

Individuals with a higher sense of self-compassion had improved relationship functioning and reported higher empathetic tendencies, altruism and forgiveness for others in their close relationships (Neff & Pommier, 2012).

By the nature of its name, ‘self-compassion’ sounds selfish but having compassion for ourselves in fact allows us to engage in empathy for others. Creating closer relationships, being better at supporting those in need and being able to truly forgive others. All acts of a selfless and supportive person.

MEET LUCREZIA

"I decided to take the Mindful Self-Compassion course in March 2020 and I was so lucky that the course started at the beginning of the first lockdown because it helped me massively throughout it all. The course helped me become aware of certain behaviours and patterns that were negatively influencing my everyday life and interpersonal relationships. Jessica’s guided meditations are the only ones I’ve ever been able to do and I still do them to this day. It was a hard process given the time in which it was happening, however, I felt so accomplished when I finished it because I came out of it with a whole new set of skills that have helped me have a new approach to certain things in life.

I am so grateful to have had the chance to take this course at the time that I did."

Answering your questions

MSC takes meditation to the next level. Whilst mindfulness meditation is the foundation of the course, we take this skill and use it to cultivate a better relationship with our truest selves. We look at why we are so hard on ourselves, challenge the narratives that keep us feeling like we’re never good enough and shift our internal motivation. These skills aren’t dependent on having a device, internet connection or someone else guiding you. MSC empowers you with the skills to cultivate your own source of self-compassion.

When we’ve lived a life where being hard on ourselves has bred success, we often attribute this success to this harsh mindset. We may feel that it’s a ‘necessary evil’ to punish ourselves towards our goals. When we cultivate the ability to choose self-compassion, we may discover that we are actually more motivated and driven because we remove the strain of fighting against ourselves. Those who complete the MSC course often experience a shift in energy and output. When we’re no longer exerting ourselves on self-punishment, we can channel this energy to drive our passions, be creative and exceed our expectations.

Often we see time devoted to ourselves as selfish time but what if that time and energy was necessary in order for us to be a better person in every other area of our lives? Ultimately, we cannot pour from an empty cup and a life without self compassion keeps our cup perpetually empty. Allowing room for self compassion gives us the ability to better empathise with others and focus on the more important things in life. This isn’t selfish but self less.

When you’re your own harshest critic, opening up and showing your vulnerabilities can be terrifying. Especially when it comes to exploring the roots of self compassion. That’s why we create a safe, small and supportive environment where all you need to do is to show up with an open mind and heart. You’ll never be forced to speak, share or open up necessarily – this is your process.

MSC is created for those who are looking to actively challenge their inner critic. And this act of turning towards our deep rooted beliefs, feelings and issues can be difficult. Especially if you’re in the midst of a mental health crisis or are recovering from a traumatic event in your life. As a result, Jessica will speak with you personally to establish whether MSC is the correct path for you at this time. If not, you’ll be guided in the right direction of resources, courses and other ways to work though your current struggles.

Just as when we learn any new skill, time and effort must be invested if we want to reap the rewards and the MSC course is no different. The course entails 2 hours of live teaching time per week and a half-day retreat. You’ll also have to commit to spending up to 30 minutes per day doing your mindfulness practice. We understand that this may seem like a lot not be possible with an already busy life, however, the hybrid model of on-demand and live lessons gives you more flexibility to make space around your lifestyle. What’s more, you’ll be freeing up time usually spent on self-criticism, creating space to think with more clarity and objectivity.

MBSR focuses on the practice of meditation as a skill, whereas MSC expands on the practice of meditation to allow for a more therapeutic and healing experience. Mindfulness will be one of the tools you use to solidify true feeling of self compassion, but this is only completed in parallel with deep inner work. It’s this combination which makes MSC a highly effective and truly transformative form of meditative skill.

Why is MSC taught in a group setting?

Meeting new people and embarking on a new skill can be scary, that’s why the course format and your lead coach Jessica is there to guide you throughout. Almost every individual that joins the course comes alone, and often from many different corners of the planet. All of you are there for the same reason - to learn. Jessica is there to help you explore the techniques and enrich your knowledge - taking you down the same path she engaged in when she engaged in MSC herself.

How do I fit mindfulness into my everyday life?

As an ex-corporate worker, Jessica has a deep-rooted experience in integrating these practices into our everyday lives. She understands that it seems like another thing to add to the list but actually, it can run alongside your current activities - on your commute, driving or at work. When it comes to MSC, the teachings and skills can be woven into every area of your life. You learn to catch self-judgemental thoughts, feelings and behaviours and replace them with acts of compassion.
